Crystal Tips is my current foster dog.
Crystal is an 6 month old Border Collie cross Welsh Collie and is currently on foster in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.
The Crystal Fact File
Dog status: Good but is excitable and likes to play. Would prefer to have canine company.
Cat status: Cat workable.
Child status: Good, could be rehomed with over 8’s if dog savvy.
House training: Very good
Home alone: Has been left for short periods but looking for someone home most of the day. Not suitable for full time workers.
Basic training: Needs someone committed to training.
Crystal Tips has a really sweet nature and has been a little star considering her age, breed and the many changes she has recently been through. She is looking for a very active home who is committed to continuing her training and giving her a channel for her drive and energy such as agility or flyball.
Crystal is in foster with 2 other Collies, one sociable and playful and one that would prefer not to have a puppy in his house! Outside the house Crystal is great with other dogs, reading their body language well and respecting their wishes but more than happy to play if invited. Inside however she is all go! She will continually go back for more and more interaction whether appropriate or not. This has lessened considerably but will need further work. Crystal has had several moves and been spayed since being in foster so has had less exercise than normal and will have a bearing on her behaviour. She wouldn’t be suitable to live with an elderly, frail or nervous dog at this time. She can be easily over-stimulated, which leads to her getting over-tired and brattish. This is when she just will not back off, having said that, after a short time in foster she has become more settled and is voluntarily settling down for a nap.
She is not currently in foster with cats and may be workable in the right home but the over enthusiastic play style indoors will need to be considered. She should be young enough to learn to calm her interactions if introductions were made appropriately and slowly and the cats and potential owner was confident and experienced.
Crystal is very people friendly and has charm to match her good looks and wins people over immediately. She is not in foster with children but came from a home with children and we have no temperament concerns. She is a puppy though so perhaps a little boisterous for young children?
Crystal has clearly had some good training already. She knows sit, down, has a bit of a wait, recall is not too bad and once the initial excitement has worn off she checks in regularly. She needs a bit more training for loose lead walking but everything at present is new and therefore exciting for her. She is easily managed with a harness and training lead though and once the initial excitement has worn off walks nicely and is receptive to people around her. She is bright, interactive and food orientated so while any new owner needs to understand that she will come with basic training she is a blank slate who will excel with consistent and patient training. Her recall with treats and no distractions is good but add anything exciting to the mix and it is less than perfect! What potential though!
Crystal has shown no possessive or aggressive behaviour at all with humans or other dogs and will happily share toys. She is happy to be touched all over, is great at the vets, travels well in the car after getting over initial nerves, has no fear of household noises (well apart from the dreaded hoover) and is clean in the house. She would need a secure, well fenced garden though has shown no sign of trying to jump the boundaries. She chews a lot at present, but only on her toys - stag bar, nylabones, Kongs, raggers, etc, however she is supervised 100% or in a crate. She is very easy to redirect onto an appropriate toy and now raids the toy box and brings over toys for a game. Other times, she is happy to chew and fling toys about on her own.
Crystal has only been left for short periods by her foster home. While she isn’t distressed at being left she will need someone around for most of the time at the moment. Crystal would not be suitable for full time workers that work out of the house but may be suitable for home workers. We would initially be looking at collie/working breed experienced homes as she could get into terrible mischief if she did not have enough mental and physical input. A “job” for her would be good, like agility or flyball, but as long as any prospective owner knows how to mentally tire her out, she would be OK. Anyone who expects that a half hour walk around the block once a day would lead her to sleep the rest of the day would be in for a very rude awakening!
In summary, Crystal is an absolutely smashing girl but she needs to be “doing” something and has the prospect to be amazing. Her potential as an agility dog is obvious; she’s light, fast and has a desire to learn. She would need further basic training but is confident and biddable. Unfortunately we have no idea what her ears are or will do in the future!
All Hope Rescue dogs are neutered (if over 6 months), vaccinated, flea treated, wormed and micro-chipped prior to adoption. A homecheck will be required, and you will need to come and meet the dog with your own dogs and family. We have a suggested minimum donation of £160. A Pre-Home Interest Form can be downloaded via this link hope-rescue.proboards.com/thread/21146 and should be returned to dogs@hoperescue.org.uk
